Depp was sued by Heard for defamation over a December opinion piece she wrote for The Washington Post describing herself as “a public figure who represents domestic violence.” The lawyers for Depp claimed that he was slammed by the article, even though it didn’t mention his name. Heard made counterclaims, claiming that her former lawyer slammed her by describing her abuse claims as hoaxes.
The jury decided that Heard make Depp the sum of 10 million dollars in compensation as well as five million dollars in punitive damage. In addition, the punitive damage was decreased to USD 350,000 by the state limit. The jury handed down Heard the sum of USD 2,000,000 for her counterclaim.
